'Fire Lighting with Traditional ‘Flint & Steel’'

Activity Description:

The history of the metal Steel goes back some 4,000 years, and I would hazard a guess that its application in the process of Fire Lighting was made only a short while after this discovery. Once discovered the widespread use of ‘Flint & Steel’ to deftly create fire persisted right up until only the last century, when it was superseded by the Friction Match.

During this class I will be demonstrating how fire could have been created by our forbears whilst using this most ancient of techniques. I will give my own slant on why some methods are better than others and which should be used given a specific set of circumstances.

WARNING – FUN ALERT‼! Lighting fire with chemicals is great fun … if you know what you are doing!

Many chemicals, when reacted together, give out sufficient heat, in the form of an exothermic reaction, to be able to ignite many forms of Tinder and Fuel … however, some chemicals do it more dramatically than others! :-)

During this class we will take a peek into the wonderful world of exothermic reactions, and how we can utilize these reactions to create fire. We will use several of the most commonly available chemicals which also produce some of the most dramatic effects.
