Shark Designs - Handmade and Hand Stitched
Finest Quality Leather Belts

The Very Best Leather and Brass Buckle

Each of our exclusive Shark - Leatherwear range of belts is handmade from a single piece of the finest quality soft, supple leather cowhide. The actual thickness of the leather ranges from about 3.5mm to 5.0mm (+/-), depending upon the belt style that is required. Each belt is also made with a genuine solid brass buckle, adding a little extra quality that can only be justified in a product of this class.

Each belt is supplied with a handmade and hand stitched moveable belt loop to keep the end of your belt securely held in place.

Stitching Quality

All stitching on these superb belts is done entirely by hand, using the strongest and most reliable stitching method of all - the 'Double Handed Saddler's Stitch'. The 'Double Handed Saddler's Stitch' stitch is considerably stronger form of stitching than anything that can be made on a sewing machine, because each line of thread creates a continuous stitch that is completely independent from the other line of thread, in that each line of thread crosses over the other line of thread between the layers of leather. Machine sewn stitching, on the other hand, simply loops each line of thread over the other. In effect this means that if one line of thread fails when the stitching is made by sewing machine, both lines of thread will fail, whereas if one line of thread fails when using the 'Double Handed Saddler's Stitch' the other line of thread will still remain cohesive and strong. In summary, the ‘Saddle’ stitching gives the item a double form of stitching.

The sewing thread we use is called 'Tiger Thread', which is arguably the strongest and most reliable hand sewing thread on the market today. So that when leather is sewn together using the combination of 'Double Handed Saddler's Stitch' and 'Tiger Thread', you can be sure that it will never come apart at the seams. To this end we guarantee our workmanship for life.

The waist size that you provide us with will be the measurement used to the middle hole of your new belt. The number of holes on your belt will depend upon the style of belt that you require.

All of our handmade belts are custom made to your waist size, it is therefore very important that we obtain the most accurate waist measurements we can from you. To this end there are a number of ways that can be used to work out the size of belt that you require:

  1. Put on a pair of trousers, chinos, jeans or whatever you would like to wear your new belt with. Then take a tape measure and place the end through the loops of the garment you are wearing as if it were a belt. Measure your waist, making sure that you do not pull the tape too tight. Please make sure that you keep it comfortable.
  2. Taking the measurement from an existing belt. Remove the belt from the garment it is usually worn with, and then buckle it through the hole that is most favoured. Pull on the sides of the belt so that the buckles tongue and the hole are seated in the normal position, as if worn. You can then measure the circumference of the belt with a reasonable degree of accuracy, but make sure that the tape is passed through any loops etc when you do so.
  3. If you do not have a tape measure, you can take an accurate waist measurement by taking a piece of string or cord and tying it comfortably around your waist or through the loops of your trousers etc. Mark the string or cord with a pen wherever you wish the belt to sit and then remove it and measure it with a ruler.
  4. If you are ordering one of our Bushcraft (801) or Work Wear (911) heavy duty belts and you require that it be worn over a jacket or other thick garment, the waist measurement should be made whilst these garments are being worn.

Please remember: -

You cannot make a belt longer, if it is too short for you, but you can add some holes, to make a belt shorter, if it is slightly too long. It is much better, therefore, to order a belt that is slightly too long rather than too short.

If you have any doubts about the waist size that you require please add 2-inches (50mm) to the waist size that you give us, it is important to add room for movement. If you require any assistance about waist size, please do not hesitate to Contact Us.

All belts are 'Handmade to Order' so please read, and onderstand, our 'Bespoke Returns Policy' before you make a purchase.

The design inspiration for The Bushcraft Belt – '801' was based upon the Equine – 'Shire Horse' Harness Strap. This kind of harness fastening strap was an integral part of carthorse tack and was definitely built to last. These special harness straps were so strong, they could enable a massive, 17-hands, Shire horse to pull a fully loaded cart.

Shark – Leatherwear has taken the ideals of this harness and incorporated it into a superior quality belt specially suited for those who enjoy the great outdoors. This superlative belt is a lighter weight version of the Professional Belt – 911 heavy duty work wear belt (see below) yet is the perfect combination of both function and style, being made to bridge the difficult gap between hard-working work wear clothes and stylish, comfortable, classic casual wear clothing. The inner surface of these top grade leather belts is so smooth and soft it can even be used as a razor strop, whilst out in the woods – as long as you have a piece of string to hold your trousers up with!

The Bushcraft Belt – '801' belt is handmade from a single piece of the finest quality 1 ½-inch wide, 3.5mm (+/-) thick, soft, supple leather with a genuine solid brass 'West End Roller' buckle that has been hand to the belt using the incredibly strong 'Double Handed Saddler's Stitch'. Therefore, it is guaranteed to be both very tough and very durable. In fact, it comes with a lifetime guarantee on workmanship, so that you can be sure that it will be made to very highest standard.

These belt is made to a slightly longer specification than the 101, 306 and 501 belts since it can be worn over jackets and other outer garments, so please make sure that the waist measurement you send to us is taken when wearing this king of clothing.

The design inspiration for The Professional Belt – '911' is taken directly from the traditional Equine – 'Shire Horse' Harness Strap. The 'Shire Horse' Harness Strap was an integral part of all carthorse tack, so it was essential that it was incredibly strong and built to last. These special harness straps were specifically designed to withstand the enormous pulling, and tugging, forces that were involved when a massive, 17-hands, Shire horse was pulling a fully loaded cart, with no chance of them breaking.

To make a superior quality, heavy-duty, work-wear belt that met the stringent standards that professional outdoor personnel required from a belt of this nature, it was necessary for us to make The Professional Belt – '911', belt from a single piece of the finest quality 1 ½-inch wide, 4.5 to 5mm thick, hot oil dipped bridle 'Butt' leather. The belt needed a tough buckle to match so we fitted it with a genuine, solid brass, heavy-duty, 'West End Roller' buckle. We can honestly say that this top of the range heavy-duty work-wear belt is made for the most discerning outdoor professional. It is both comfortable and style, and designed to be worn all day and still look smart.

The Professional Belt – '911' is handmade using the traditional ‘Double Handed Saddler’s Stitch’ , which is a considerably stronger form of stitching than anything that has been done on a sewing machine, since each line of thread creates a continuous stitch that is completely independent from the other line of thread, effectively giving the item a double form of stitching.

The Professional Belt – '911' is made, unusually, with the buckle loop leather facing outwards, and whilst this may at first glance appear to be the wrong way round, it is made this way for a good reason. It is necessary to stitch the loop so that it faces outwards for comfort, whilst still maintaining strength and reliability. With the buckle loop facing outwards the interior surface of the belt that is nearest to the skin is kept smooth, so that it will not chafe or dig into the stomach causing discomfort when worn for extended periods of time.

Both the ‘Bushcraft’ - 801 and The Professional Belt – '911' belts are suitable for all outdoor professionals from Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade and Security Guard personnel, to Survivalist and Bushcraft Enthusiasts, Hikers, Campers, and Scouts etc. We would, however, recommend that you choose the ‘Bushcraft’ - 801, when a lighter work wear belt would be more suitable for more casual needs.

The Professional Belt – '911' and the Emergency Services.

Many of our customers are members of the emergency services, such as the Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade and Security forces. They purchased The Professional Belt – '911' belts because of its superior strength, durability and smart (clean-cut) traditional look. These belts are made longer than most other belts so that they can be worn over outer jackets and other thicker outer garments. These clean, functional belts are usually made in black or dark brown leather so that they can be worn as part of a formal, or work-wear, professional uniform.
