Junior Fire Lighting Kit (Basic)

  • Level 1 Spark Based Fire Lighting Kit
  • Great For All Beginners Young and Old
  • Used By All Ages From 6-Years Plus

This small, but comprehensive, trainee fire lighting kit was originally designed so that my son, who was 6-years old at the time (see You-Tube video) was able to practice his spark based fire lighting skills. The kit was then developed, and adapted, to enable these same skills to be taught to Cubs and Scouts. This kit has everything that is required to develop the confidence and proficiency of any beginner to this wonderful fire lighting methodology from the ages of 6-years and older.

Once a student has developed the basic skills required to create fires, purely based upon sparks (i.e. without matches or lighters), they can progress to the more advanced methods of spark based fire lighting, which involves the use of traditional ‘Flint & Steel’ and then from there they can progress to ‘Flint & Iron Pyrite’.

Traditional ‘Flint & Steel’ is a fire lighting technology that has been around for some 2,000 years. However, the use of sparks to create fire is a technology that is much more ancient than that. The use of naturally occurring ‘Flint & Iron Pyrite’ is a technology that has been around for at least 14,000 years.

This kit includes the following items:

  1. Mini- PyroFlint™ Fire Block. There is a ferrocerium Mini- PyroFlint™ attached to the striking surface the Fire Block. The Fire Block itself is made from a Beech wood block that measures 55mm by 27mm by 10mm and has a Lanyard hole that can be adapted for the wrist or neck use. The Mini- PyroFlint™ has a substantial life expectancy of well over 2,000 strikes, many times, more than enough to master the techniques required for this form of fire lighting.
  2. Steel Striker. The Steel Striker is a piece of Hacksaw Blade that has been custom sharpened in such a way that it maximises spark production yet is completely safe for children to use without fear of cutting themselves.
  3. Char Cloth: This Char Cloth is tailor made by us from high quality cotton cloth. It will create an ember even from the vaguest of sparks, thus developing the students confidence.
  4. Pre-Oiled Cotton Balls: These Cotton Balls can be ignited into a direct flame by the sparks created by the Mini- PyroFlint™ Fire Block. Once alight they will burn for approximately five minutes, since they have been treated with pure natural Olive oil, an oil that does not become sticky and rancid when exposed to air as do many other types of oil.
  5. Instructions & Safety Card in a Laminated Pouch: This credit card sized Instruction card has many useful tips on Fire Safety and Fire Lighting that all beginners should know. It is fully Laminated so that it can be kept on or about your person ready to read, and re-read, when the information is required.
More information about making a fire from sparks can be found on our Bushcraft Articles and Tips section.

This video shows my son Jamie, who was 6-years old at the time, lighting a fire using a standard Ferrocerium Fire Flint, Char Cloth, Jute Tinder and a piece of Natural Flint (the Natural flint was not very sharp, which is why it took severalattempts to create a spark).
