Shark-Tinderbox PyroFlint™ Super Alloy Strikers are the most modern and reliable means of striking sparks from any type of pyrophoric alloy fire-flints on the market. Measuring just 2 1/4-Inches (58mm) total length with a striker blade length of 3/4-Inch (17mm) and weighing in at just a quarter of an ounce, about 7 grams, they are safe to use and very hardwearing. When using a Super Alloy Striker with any one of our full range of modern pyrophoric alloy flint rods, you will be able to safely produce a shower of superhot sparks that reach temperatures of 3,100° Centigrade, which is 5,600° Fahrenheit. These superhot sparks are hot enough to ignite just about every kind of tinder that there is.

These superhot sparks can be used to ignite a myriad of things that include Gas, paraffin or petrol stoves, Tinder Card, cotton wool, Amadou Tinder Fungus, the individual leaves from our exclusive Shark-Tinderbox 'Tinder Book', shredded Paper, birch bark, honey suckle bark, a whole host of other types of bark and Char Cloth. Click here to see how to use a PyroFlint™, you will be amazed at just how easy it is to use one of ourPyroFlints™.

Precision Ground Cutting Edge

The Super Alloy Striker is made from high grade tool-steel that has been specially hardened to give it an extremely long life span. It should last the average Bushcraft, Survival and Camping enthusiast for many years of trustworthy service. The Super Alloy Striker has been specially designed to maximise spark production with minimal effort and technique, making it ideal for use by everyone from absolute beginners to tried and tested Bushcraft Old-timers.

The precision ground Super Alloy Striker works with magical ease on any of our range of Shark-Tinderbox PyroFlints™ of because each of the five exposed flat surfaces has been precision ground to give six very hard and very sharp 90-degree cutting-edges. Having precision ground 90-degree angles ensures that each cutting edge is just about as tough and durable as a cutting edge can be so it will easily strike off sparks from any modern pyrophoric alloy flint rod.

Cutting Edge Safety

The normal code of practice, when using modern ferrocerium flint rods, is to strike off sparks from the surface of the flint rod by means of a sharp knife blade, piece of sharp flint or glass, or some other sharpened tool, since a cutting edge that is dull will not generate sparks. As a general rule of thumb, the sharper the cutting edge the easier it is to create sparks and the more of them that will be produced.

However!

Now I know that this is little dramatic, but it should give everyone cause for concern, to consider that when sharp cutting tools are manoeuvred at a fast speeds, by human muscle, tendon and bone, especially if your hands are cold and you are tired at the end of a long hard day, the chances of causing yourself a serious cut, if your aim is slightly off, by striking a finger or your hand, instead of the ferrocerium rod with the sharpened cutting tool are quite high. Certainly, the shocking vision of an oozing measure of the red stuff dripping onto your feet, or worse still, your tinder, or tinder bundle, can be a hindrance to best performance and practice; the risk should therefore be kept to an absolute minimum.

Since all of the Super Alloy Striker’s cutting edges are precision ground to 90-degree angles, which is a cutting angle that is most suited to removing shards of pyrophoric alloy, yet much too large to be effective at removing slices skin. When using the PyroFlint™ - Super Alloy Striker the risk of personal accidents will dramatically decrease, whilst the chances of making a successful strike and obtaining an ember on the first strike will dramatically increase.

The Super Alloy Striker’s Tool Steel striking platform is securely moulded to an ergonomic small plastic handle that incorporates a handy lanyard hole so that it can be attached to one of our PyroFlints™ and safely attached to a belt or stowed in a pocket.

Full Range of PyroFlints™

Our Shark-Tinderbox range of PyroFlints™ vary in size from the smallest PyroFlint™ – ‘6mm', which measures 6mm in diameter by 60mm in length and weighs 10.5 grams, to the massive PyroFlint™ – 'Priest' that is so large, it will last even the most ardent Bushcraft, Survival or Camping enthusiast several lifetimes of constant daily use. The PyroFlint™ – 'Priest' is truly a forever fire-starter that weighs in at 209 grams (and measure a whopping 18mm diameter by 130mm long.

The Two Types of PyroFlint™

There are two main categories that the modern pyrophoric alloy PyroFlints™ are divided in to two. Those with a lower Iron content, usually called ‘Standard’ PyroFlints™ and those with a higher Iron content usually called ‘Durable’ PyroFlints™. The two types can typically be distinguished by their colour, since the Low-Iron ‘Standard’PyroFlints™ are usually dark-grey to black, whilst the High-Iron ‘Durable’ PyroFlints™ are usually a lighter grey or have a metallic look.

Why Have Two Types of PyroFlint™?

Standard PyroFlints™ are generally a little easier to generate sparks from, due to the higher percentage of pyrophoric alloys in the mix at manufacture. The sparks generated are a little cooler than those produced from the higher Iron Durable PyroFlints™ and do not live as long, but you get quite a lot more of them and they are easier to produce. Durable PyroFlints™ are a little harder to generate sparks from than lower Standard Iron type, due to the slightly lower levels of the pyrophoric alloys incorporated into the mix when manufactured. However, whilst the Durables produce less sparks for the same given effort, than the Standard ferrocerium rods, the sparks that are produced are substantially hotter and have a much longer lifespan, which enables them to ignite a wider variety of tinder types within a greater degree of ambient humidity levels and degrees of tinder dampness. In addition, Durable ferrocerium rods are much more resistant to corrosion, hence their name, than the Low-Iron Standard ferrocerium rods, plus you can scrape off a quantity of Durable ferrocerium rod shavings that can then be used to ignite even damp tinder, which is virtually impossible to do with a Standard ferrocerium rod.

All PyroFlints™ are supplied with full instructions.
